I was part of a broadcast crew covering the game Friday night and couldn't help but wonder if there isn't some bad blood between these two teams/coaches. Early in the 3rd quarter, with Garber leading 36-0, Laverne pulled their starters on both sides of the ball. Garber didn't. Then when Garber finally did bring in the 2s and Laverne scored on them, to cut the lead to 28, the Garber 1's went right back in against the Laverne 2s to get the lead back to 34.

Obviously every coach has his own reasons for doing what they do but this unbiased onlooker couldn't help but wonder if there was some bad blood between the two and couldn't help but notice that 30 miles down the road another coach pulled his 1s at halftime leading 40-0 and never put the 1s back in even though the final score ended up 46-32.

I would say it had to do with securing the 15 district points and their top placement in the district going in to the Canton game. Garber is 28 points up on Canton in district. If Canton blew out Geary and Garber had squeaked Lavern, Canton could have closed the 28 point gap and taken number one in the district going in to their match up this week. Canton did a similar thing to them a couple of weeks ago. I don't think there is anything personal or bad blood, it's just business.

Reference to the points can be found in OSSAA 2009-2010 Football pages FB5 and FB6 section IV “District Play and Advancement In To Play-Off Series” Para3 sub para (a )and( b).

Hope this helps

Maybe I'm missing something, and without going out to check the reference that 8manfan was so gracious to list for us, but if 15 points is the most a team is going to take away with a win, why would it be so important to win by 34 as apposed to 28 or even 21. Even if Canton blew out Geary as mentioned, they only get 15 points. I get wanting to secure at least a 15 point lead, but like 92Indian asked, why 34?

Thats exactly correct. I may not have stated it appropriately, but in my example the best that could happen is Canton move 15 points closer. Unless Garber had lost and then a negative value would have been applied to their district score.

But I agree with you in that if you only get 15 points. The running of the scores or mercy ruling makes no “mathematical” sense concerning district seeding. However the fans and players like it and it makes for a good show as well as stroking the coaches ego just a bit.
